French articles for monuments?
I know that you would use prepositions when you talk about the Eiffel Tower, like “Je visite la tour Eiffel.” But how about other monuments like the Gravensteen in Ghent, Belgium or other monuments. How would you decide on the gender?
I’m trying to think of monuments whose names can’t be linked to any object for which there is already a word. There is always a gender, you don’t have to decide.
Gravensteen in Ghent, Belgium for example is a castle, so it would be masculine as “chateau” is masculine in French.
Even stonehendge, which is also said “stonehenge” in French can be translated as “les pierres suspendues” – is feminin (because pierre is feminin) BUT in this case, because it’s plural you would say “Je suis allé aux stonehenge”
So everything does have a gender, whether it be a river, a tower, a pyramid, everything.
